Tom Scanlan: World Caliber Talent

If you've followed this blog at all you'll know how proud we are of Tom. He's not only a featured artist this month, he's also one of the best carvers in the world, and has the ribbons and press to prove it!
This adorable little chickadee is so incredibly lifelike that you'll want to touch it.  Like a real chickadee, it's full of attitude, and I'm sure it'll soon fly away to a new home.

Ethel Mitrovic, Creator of Phantasmagoria

Phantasmagoria: a bizarre or fantastic combination, collection or assemblage, perfectly describes Ethel's work.
Ethel is in her 80's and has reached a point in her life where she does exactly what she pleases without worrying if anyone thinks she's odd or unseemly. That attitude extends to her work which is extremely popular with our customers, in fact on more than one occasion we've had incidents where a couple of patrons have gotten into discussions over who saw the object first!

George Sapkowski, Explorer of a Traditional Process

A graduate of the Applied Photography Program at Sheridan College, George has been creating Fine Art Photography for over 25 years.
He is acutely aware of the compositional elements of each image he takes and is constantly looking for the presence of great design in the environment. He transitioned to digital a few years ago, but contends that the ability to manipulate images is only one tool and not to be overly relied upon, as no amount of manipulation can make a poor image great.
I think you'll agree, his images are great, although my image of his doesn't do it justice, so you'll have to come to the Art Emporium in Port Stanley and see it in person to experience the full effect of George's art.
Until the end of September George is offering 20% off of the regular price of his work in the gallery, just say you saw it here.

Kathy MacKay, capturing moments

Kathy is relatively new to our artist's collective, but not new to art. She says that some of her earliest memories are of painting with her grandmother, who was a talented hobbyist.
Kathy has dedicated herself to continuing to learn and improve her already impressive talent, and is currently leading a plein aire painting group that wanders Southern Ontario, brushes in hand capturing moments of beauty.

Amanda Caldwell earns a 1ST!

St Thomas elementary school teacher and Art Emporium Member Artist  Amanda Caldwell has recently earned a 1st at the prestigious Button Factory Arts Press Show in Waterloo for her art piece ‘Solitude’.
Working from a single linoleum block she carves away areas in a reductive technique called relief printing.
For each colour a new layer is removed and a trip to the printing press is made where specialized inks are applied and the block is pressed to paper transferring the image. On the whole the process is very complicated, time consuming, challenging and miss-understood with each work of art taking up to four months to create. Amanda usually pulls no more than 6 prints from a block, each different from its sisters making each print an original in it’s own right.
The print that earned her this award "Solitude" is currently on display at the Art Emporium 177 Main ST Port Stanley, where she will be available to speak about her process and motivation on Aug 19, and Aug 28, 11am-5pm
Free parking and refreshments are available

Wilf Chappell, Dreaming in Mixed Media

Wilf started out in photography using a Kodak Brownie, that was a few years ago.
As cameras developed and became more sophisticated so did Wilf's skill, then came the leap to digital, which changed everything.
Manipulation and layering opened up a whole new world for Wilf, one where his imagination and creative abilities have no boundaries.
As his innovativeness increases, so do his explorations into other media. Now as well as digital images his work contains paint and mediums adding to the layers that he loves so well.

Shirley Mihlik Thompson, An Uncommon Realist

Shirley has the uncommon ability to conjure images from the ether where as most of us lesser mortals require something to spark our creativity.
When questioned her explanation is "I've been painting since I was a child, it's all I ever wanted to do, eventually you develop powers of observation, and the visual memory to go with it."
I'd add incredible skill to that too Shirley!
